I Am My Language (أنا لغتي) is born from the belief that language is more than words, it is memory, identity, and a living bridge between past and future. Inspired by the timeless poetry of Mahmoud Darwish, our project seeks to celebrate the richness of Arabic literature.
We share works by authors from North Africa to West Asia, voices that carry the weight of history, the richness of culture, the struggles of politics, and the beauty of expression. Through novels, poetry, and non-fiction, these books allow us to see our history and our realities through the eyes of our own writers, rather than through the lens of outside assumptions.
At I Am My Language, we believe every book is a seed. It may look small, yet within it lies the power to grow. By planting these seeds, we hope to nurture connection, memory, and pride in a language that has shaped civilizations and continues to inspire hearts and minds across the world. This journey of Arabic language can be traced back to its earliest beginnings in the Arabian Peninsula before Islam, when poetry and oral traditions flourished, through the Abbasid era in Baghdad, where the House of Wisdom preserved and spread knowledge, to the golden days of Al-Andalus, where poetry and science grew side by side, and to Damascus and Cairo, where scholars developed medicine, philosophy, and literature.
And as Mahmoud Darwish once wrote:
"I am my language. I am words, woven into the fabric of memory.Without it, I am nothing. With it, I am everything I carry."
